ip have net been abie to collect my mail since sending off #24 so I am sure there is quite a bit of hot news
wating in the Postoffice. Meanwhile, enough has been happening to fill a pace or tuo.

BAWIATT REPORT= Sheldon Remington and Steve McGreevy spent several successful days on Kauaii demonstrating

that the Islands are indeed a good place for LF sionals. On the NOB band they legged 340 beacons for

41 states, all Canadian provences from Quebec west snd 5? countries total. A very high percentage of

all NDBs on the West Coast were logged. 72 was heard for about an hour from 2311 PST Jan 20 (with considerable
058). Initial reception was accomplished with a broad Racioshack receiver! Distance on this meth is \ :
something over 2450 miles. Other Lowfers were not neard, primarily due to interference from LW broadcast
stetions which are stacked up several deep on every channel. 2 was lucky enough to be in the clear til

around midnight PST when the splatter came Toering up on both sides, negating any possibility of weak signal
EOP Unfortunately Z2 was running slightly "out of spec" at the time and we Red no communication with

the island listeners, so as yet there is no occasion for dancing in the streets. Zz? was TuNning between

1-5 and 2.5 W input at the time. Current in the antenna was 200 ma or less. Antenna was 30 ft vertical

with 12 18 ft tophat elements all atop*-a massive radial and red ground system. I have not been able to

review the tapes yet, but from the Teports it appears that reception would have been possible at levels 2s

+o 25 O.5W. Hopefully we will be able to undertake experiments in the future to confirm this. a 3
hi-tech options it should be possible to close the path with 0.1 W or less! Such are the virtues of an
Ever aatee path. Can we make 3 hops next season?? Attempts to load the TLX transmitter into imerovised
antennas were unsuccessful; efficiency was so poor that Steve and Sheldon decided they had better devote their
time te listening. Now we know it can be done (and apparently much more easily than I had expected), there

should be- more j + Pie -
§ e Te incentive for future expeditions and for a permanent 17SOM presence on the islands.
